During its quarter-century operation, the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication explored fascinating, exceptionally dynamic changes that took place in the media and communication. We observed those changes, asked questions, searched for answers, commented and debated, introduced students to complex communication processes in the information society emerging in Poland. The first jubilee conference marking the twentieth anniversary of the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication, Jagiellonian University, was held in October 2018. The conference initiated meetings of researchers in the field of broadly understood social communication and media, organized under the motto “KNOWLEDGE – COMMUNICATION – ACTION”.

The fourth conference in the "Knowledge – Communication – Action” series, held on 20-21 October 2022, was organized by the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication, Jagiellonian University. The patron of this event was Mayor of Krakow, Professor Dr. habil. Jacek Majchrowski, and its scientific patron – the Polish Communication Association. The participants could attend the conference either in the building of Faculty of Management and Social Communication, Jagiellonian University, in Krakow or remotely using MS Teams. 
 
The conference was opened by Dr. habil. Agnieszka Hess, JU professor, Dr. habil. Maria Nowina Konopka, JU professor and Dr. habil. Weronika Świerczyńska-Głownia, JU professor. A Jubilee Monograph was then presented to Professor Dr. habil. Teresa Sasińska-Klas. The next item in the conference programme was a panel discussion titled “Communication revolution or evolution” with the participation of Michał Szułdrzyński, deputy editor-in-chief of the “Rzeczpospolita”daily and Michał Nowacki from DigitalFlow, a consultant in the new media and e-commerce. Four thematic sessions followed: “Trends in today's communication”; “Identity in turmoil. Media narratives of war, crises and violence”; “The future of communication – towards AI”. A panel was also dedicated to communication as viewed by young scholars.
 
The “Knowledge – Communication – Action” series of conferences is intended for creating broader research perspectives in an interdisciplinary team, This year’s edition covered a range of topics related to the concept of “new communication revolution”. The discussions addressed today’s trends, the role of artificial intelligence in the media and the future of communication. 
 
The first conference day ended with a formal dinner at the invitation of Mayor Jacek Majchrowski in the Wielopolski Palace where the participants could share their views in a more relaxing atmosphere. 
 
The event was attended by more than one hundred participants representing scholarly centres from all over Poland, and by undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students and graduates from the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication, Jagiellonian University. The speakers addressed such topics as communication in the face of threats, shaping public opinion in a digital world, research into the Web and digital platforms, evolution of social communication and media studies, today’s transformations of network communication, artificial intelligence as a subject of communication studies.

CEECOM 2021 Conference

The 13th Central and Eastern European Communication and Media Conference was held on the 22nd-23rd of October 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was held online. The main organizer of this two-day event was the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication of the Jagiellonian University. The event was co-organized by the Polish Communication Association as well as the Central and East-European Network of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA). The conference took place under the auspices of the Rector of the Jagiellonian University, the Austrian Consul General in Kraków, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kraków and Consul General of the Slovak Republic in Kraków. It was opened by the dean of the Faculty of Management and Social Communication of the Jagiellonian University, a representative of the Polish Communication Association's authorities, and members of the diplomatic corps - diplomatic missions of Central and Eastern European countries based in Kraków. The opening ceremony was followed by a presentation on  the theme of the conference, namely the New Communication Revolution and the showing of a short movie about the history of CEECOM (the link below). This film could not have been made without cooperation from distinguished academics closely related to the CEECOM and its previous events and projects: Professor Bogusława Dobek-Ostrowska. Professor Epp Lauk, Professor Zrinjka Perusko, Professor Irena Reifova and Professor Lilia Raycheva.

During the first session of the conference, the keynote lectures were given by four esteemed professors in media and communication studies: Professor Alina Bârgăoanu (National University of Political Studies and Public Administration in Bucharest), Professor Michael Brüggemann, (University of Hamburg), Professor Bogusława Dobek-Ostrowska (University of Wrocław) and Professor Zrinjka Peruško (University of Zagreb). The second plenary session of the conference was dedicated to the CEE Network. This special panel, titled ‘CEE Network – its origin, development and future’ and chaired by Professor Lenka Vochocova (vice-chair of the CEE Network), gathered scholars who have been engaged with the CEE Network for many years: Professor John Downey (ECREA President) and Professor Irena Reifova (ECREA vice-president) among others. The special panel of the Polish Communication Association (‘Social communication and media studies in Poland - heritage and future’) featured presentations by Professor Iwona Hofman (president of the PCA) who chaired this panel, Professor Bogusława Dobek-Ostrowska (University of Wrocław), Professor Teresa Sasińska-Klas (Jagiellonian University), Professor Jadwiga Woźniak-Kasperek (University of Warsaw), Professor Stanisław Jędrzejewski (Kozminski University) and Dr. habil. Katarzyna Kopecka-Piech (Maria Curie-Sklodowska University). The third part of the first conference day was intended for discussions related to the communication-centered scientific journals in the CEE region. The ‘Central European Journal of Communication (CEJC)’ panel chaired by Professor Michał Głowacki (editor-in-chief of the CEJC) was titled ‘Scholarly Journals in Central and Eastern Europe: Collaborative Practices to Support Knowledge Exchange’. The panelists, CEE journals editors (Viktorija Car / Medijske Studije, Croatia, Márton Demeter / KOME – An International Journal of Pure Communication Inquiry, Hungary, Anna Gladkova / The World of Media, Russia, Rafał Kuś / Zeszyty Prasoznawcze, Poland, Elena Negrea-Busuioc / The Romanian Journal of Communication and Public Relations, Romania, Sergei Samoilenko / Communication Association of Eurasian Researchers, CAER and Agnieszka Stępińska / Central European Journal of Communication), reflected on the scholarly collaboration in the region. This part was supplemented by a panel entitled ‘Scientific journals for young scholars in Central and Eastern Europe: experience and challenges’ organized by the ‘Com.press’ journal under the leadership of Dominika Popielec (Kazimierz Wielki University).

The second day of the conference was filled with fascinating presentations given by the CEECOM participants. Academic reflections on the new communication revolution were deepened during multiple different panels. They were divided into four parallel thematic sessions focusing on international relations and global communication, political communication in CEE, cultural issues, and COVID-19 pandemic conditions. The topics included contemporary trends in media and communication, challenges for democracy, media regulation, misinformation and disinformation, communication technologies and condition of today’s journalism. The second day also featured a roundtable discussion with representatives of Polish media. Participants in the panel entitled ‘Broad-, narrow- and egocasting. How does mediamorphosis affect the work of journalists?’ included: Beata Biel – news digital premium development unit director in TVN24 – a 24-hour commercial news channel, Adam Czerwiński – music director in the largest Polish commercial radio station RMF FM, Patryk Stanik – communication and social media manager in Tygodnik Powszechny – a weekly magazine published in Kraków since 1945, Daniel Rząsa – editor-in-chief of 300Gospodarka – a news service dedicated to economics and Kamil Turecki – international affairs journalist in the largest Polish web portal Onet.pl. The invited journalists shared their views on the new circumstances of their professional activities. The conference was closed by Malgorzata Winiarska-Brodowska, chair of the ECREA’s Central and East-European Network and chair of the CEECOM 2021 Organizing Committee, with the announcement of the next CEECOM, the 14th Central and Eastern European Communication and Media Conference, which will take place in 2023 in Brno, Czech Republic.

The third conference in the “Knowledge – Communication – Action” series, organized by the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication, Jagiellonian University, was held on 15-16 October 2020. The conference was arranged under the auspices of the Polish Communication Association, like in prior years. The Institute of Information Studies, Jagiellonian University, as one of the principal conference partners, presented in the scholarly debate a perspective of library and information sciences. Integration of researchers representing the recently defined discipline: social communication and media studies was among major objectives set by the conference organizers. Changes were the main topic discussed during the conference. Due to the crisis situation caused by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the conference was held using remote communication. More than 80 researchers from 19 scientific centres participated in this event, exceptional in its form. 65 scholars gave lectures during 14 panels.

“Interdisciplinary Communication” was the central topic of the second conference organized by the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication (IJMSC), Jagiellonian University, on 17-18 October 2019 at the Faculty of Management and Social Communication, Jagiellonian University in Kraków. The Institute of Information Studies, Jagiellonian University, carried out the role of conference partner.

Considering the new classification of academic disciplines adopted in Poland in 2018, the organizers invited researchers representing the research fields previously known as media studies, the theory of knowledge and social communication, library and information sciences. The conferences organized by the IJMSC aim to broaden research perspectives by inviting scholars who represent multiple disciplines; the events are open to various approaches to studying social communication, also those adopted in other fields of research.

During the two decades of its operation, the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication explored fascinating, exceptionally dynamic changes that took place in the media and communication. We observed those changes, asked questions, searched for answers, commented and debated, introduced students to complex communication processes in the information society emerging in Poland. The discussions held and lectures given at the jubilee conference held on 25-26 October 2018 described the changes and indicated future development directions of the media.

The conference on research topics was preceded by a ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of operation of the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication, Jagiellonian University, held at Collegium Novum.
