DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION

The Department of Journalism and International Communication was established by a resolution adopted by the JU Senate on 28 June 1995 as the JU International School of Journalism. The university authorities aimed to introduce a course of study in journalism then unavailable at the Jagiellonian University. The International School of Journalism merged in 1998 with the newly established Institute of Journalism and Social Communication, to form its basic structure and operate as its Department. The ISJ retained its name until 2016, to be eventually renamed, as the Institute developed and precisely defined its academic and research profile, the Department of International Communication and Media. In another phase of reorganizing the research structure of the Institute, decision was made in 2020 to change the Department name into its current version, i.e. the Department of Journalism and International Communication.

The Department upholds the tradition of research into journalism. Studies on journalism focus on two principal areas: research into the history, nature and transformation of journalism as a scientific discipline and practical competences necessary to practise the profession. Studies conducted by researchers from the Department also cover such topics as transformation and integration of journalist genres and media formats, including the process of media convergence. The area of research done in the Department also includes media organization management, media economics and digitalization of the media market from a comparative perspective and on an international scale. Additionally, researchers from our Department study communication processes, considering new institutionalism, and sustainable development of media, political and economic systems in the world.
